Have you ever watched Kevin Youkalis of the Boston Red Sox hit a baseball? Or perhaps you have seen video clips of Jimi Hendrix playing guitar? Or maybe you have had a discussion about how to put something together and found yourself asking yourself “why would anyone do it that way?” And there is always the times you hear someone giving directions and you think “why are they telling them to go that way?”
To be unorthodox typically means you have broken from convention or tradition. It can imply an independent way of thought. But sometimes it is much simpler than that. It may be from your logic and with your ability; it may be the best way you can achieve your goals in whatever area it is you are pursuing.
So while it may be true that you would never teach a young kid to hold a bat and stand in the batters box like Kevin Youkalis, the fact is he is one of the best hitters at the professional level. Likewise Jimi Hendrix played a right handed guitar left handed. So while you would teach a new guitarist to do that, no one is going to argue with the results.
The bottom line often times is plain old results. And sometimes it takes blunt honesty with ourselves and thorough self examination to recognize if we need to change our approach.
Take another example. The world famous rock band U2. In an interview many years ago I heard the lead singer Bono and the bands guitarist David Evans (aka The Edge) reveal an interesting factoid about their early years.
Like most aspiring kids in a band they wanted to be famous rock stars so they emulated their favorite artists. They started their band in a garage. Yes the old garage band. However over time they came to an embarrassing conclusion. In their eyes, and ears, they stunk. Perhaps their friends and parents gave them some bad vibes also; I do not recall them saying that however. The point is they decided they weren’t going anywhere as a horrible cover band.
Did they give up?, obviously not. They decided to do their own thing, create their own sound, a sound that they could perform and make it rockin’ and hellacious. And it worked out quite fabulously for them I would say.
So what about you and your Internet business pursuit? Face it, some of us are just not going to catch on to all the nuances and details that have proven to be in the successful formula of on line businesses. Some of us may even be intimidated with technology and therefore we get all screwy when we try Internet applications. We want to apply all the things we are learning but we are struggling to get it down. Recall the famous expression “the heart is willing but the flesh is weak”.
And then there is the time factor. Many of us don’t have time to do everything that needs done or it takes too long to do those things. At the end of the day, we feel like we are spinning our wheels in quicksand.
So what should you do if any of this describes you? Naturally we always have the option of getting help. And there are any numbers of ways to go about that. Briefly though here are some other options:
- Friends in your circle that can teach you what you are not grasping – meet new ones if you have to
- Online friends who can teach what you don’t understand – again meet new ones if need be
- Education to teach you what you are missing – correspondence, on line, college, and video
instruction - Trial and error – including the unorthodox mentality
Yes notice the last suggestion I included? Hey if famous people can rise in their chosen field by doing things their own way why can’t some of us who are having difficulty doing the standard approach do the same in our Internet pursuit?
The fact is we can continue to learn as much as we are able and apply it to the best of our ability. But maybe we will have to create our own unique version of it. Maybe we need to conform the information we comprehend into our practical logic. And maybe we will have to fall of the horse a few more times than others. But so what?
Jimi Hendrix developed a whole unique style and sound. Kevin Youkalis is batting .311 this season, which is great for those who don’t know baseball. It means 3 out of every times he is at the plate he gets a hit. In baseball that is extremely hard to do. So the fact that he does it in a different way doesn’t matter to his boss and team because he gets the job done.
So in the end maybe you have thought about giving up your on line goals a million times because you just can’t get anything going and/or you aren’t making any money. Then maybe it is time to tweak and customize your system, which in essence everyone needs to do in their Internet work. In the final analysis there is no right or wrong way to run an Internet business. Yes there are proven ways and sound business practices that are better than others of course. The conclusion of the matter is the results.
So as the recent popular cliché encourages us, think outside the box. Using the premise of trial and error mixed with trying unique methods, you can turn your fears or perceived failures into your success!
