Close up: The Information Providers

Webmaster News Blog - Close up: The Information Providers

A comedian once told this joke. He said “I was in the store the other day and I asked the guy behind the counter, can I melt dry ice and get wet?” The person behind the counter looks at me and says “I don’t know I better ask my manager Steve”.

Now whether you get a chuckle out of the dry humor it reminds of something we are all familiar with. No matter what situation we are in there is always “that person” someone suggests asking for information. Yes, there are people out there who are the “knower’s” and providers of information.

An example of this in the Internet world is the Internet Research business. Indeed there are many applications for the need of Internet Researchers. Today we are going focus on what I call the information providers, people who make specific information available and offer it via a web site. Sometimes it is free to the web surfer and others are subscription sites. Both are examples to those of you thinking about setting up a site like this.

There are those among us who are very talented at gathering needed and useful information and presenting it in a logical and organized fashion, making life easy for those of us who need such information. You providers have an opportunity to help your fellowman and have a nice Internet business going on. Here are 2 examples.

Oh and remember these 2 examples were chosen by me and not paid ads. I am using them a general examples and not suggesting you use their site or not to use their site. We are strictly interested in how they present their service so we can get an idea of how we could offer ours.

The first one to take a look at is http://www.mapquest.com/. Chances are many of us have used this site. Its primary function is to provide maps and directions.

The Home Page is full of info and choices but not overly cluttered in my opinion, which is good. You don’t want people asking themselves “oh my, what do I do next?” as they are looking at your home page. In fact right at the very top is a tool bar of a few simple choices. One of them is a link to AOL.com which is probably the sponsor for mapquest. A sponsor is a big reason the site is free for you and I to use and a way for AOL to increase their business.

Across the very top to the right is a site search bar, always a good idea. Below the very top line is the mapquest logo and another set of options to choose from in the form of a site menu. You got maps, directions, yellow pages, local, and gas prices to choose from, each providing self explanatory and useful information.

The main section of the site is for directions and maps. To the right of the directions is a prominent banner ad. This is a great revenue maker for your site. This site features this one main one but you may offer more. That is not the only ads and money generators they have however.

Scroll down below the map section and you will see a row of banner/image links. The section is titles Mapquest Tips, Features, and Partners. This is very clever because it mixes presentation of other helpful types of information you can read and it offers a chance to visit some affiliate sponsors. Likely the partners are paying for their presence on the site. Again that is a great way to earn some income by providing ads and links to affiliate partners.

There is also a link to a Mapquest blog and many options at the bottom of the page leading people to other AOL related links. Also demonstrating that you can branch off from your already established Internet business and create a site like Mapquest providing a specific information service and increase promotion for your original business. This is in essence what AOL is doing with mapquest.

Another example is a company providing information for a niche market. Please visit http://beta.beckett.com/. They specialize in the sports collectible arena. For many years the Beckett Company has published magazines for sports collectors to purchase that gives a list of the market value of items such as sports cards. As a result of the massive popularity and the simplicity of the Internet they now offer this member site for the same purpose. It is a paid subscription site.

As you can see on the Home page they also take advantage of advertising. Some of which features items you can purchase from their collectible sales partners. In fact the home page features a prominent banner ad across the top of the page.

Below the banner is a tool bar related to the Beckett site. Parallel to that on the right side of the page is where members can log in or information of how or why you can join. The mid section of the page offers more selections of how to use and benefit from the Beckett site. For example there are message boards and forum type options available. Of course they have a search bar there for your convenience, which is always a must or at least a should.

Now keep in mind however that most of the site is only available to members, which brings us to one quick note. This site is a prime example of how you can turn research and data into a income. Keep in mind that sports collectibles continue to fluctuate in market value and there are always new items put out virtually every day. So they are working behind the scenes to remain up to date with the information and managing the web site by the minute. So part of your member fee is for them to earn money, but also they are working for that money.

So you research gurus out there, maybe this is you gig? Yes Internet research is a job prevalent in the medical and legal fields but it also manifests itself in the form of the examples we have provided today. Beckett offers subscriptions starting at $18 USD a month. So you can do the math and project the potential of what is out there in some niche markets. Now keep in mind there are operating costs. The more involved the site is the more the cost will be to run it. But that is a standard business reality.

Anyway ……. this is something to investigate. Do you have the ability or the access to needed information? Perhaps you can make it available through a free site and earn income through sponsors and ads. Or maybe the information you can provide is worth it to many enough that they would pay a member fee to have it available?

I think you know what you need to do now.

Why not to use Google Adsense?

Webmaster News Blog - Why not to Use Google Adsense?

Having learned about the benefits of using Google Adsense, you should also learn about its underlying issues. Knowing the pros and cons of a system helps you create more decisive ideas whether what PPC system you can benefit most from.

So, why should you not choose to use Google Adsense? There are some reasons that you should know before using this system. First, you should learn that Google has the power to terminate or suspend, at any time, an agreement for any reason. This has been the reason why many online publishers’ accounts were unfairly disabled without any explanation. If you can risk your Adsense account being banned, even without violating the terms of agreement, then do so.

After getting banned, you will learn that Google Adsense will not be paying what they owe you for that month. Why would you like to put your earnings at risk? Having learned that you are not compensated, you may think of contacting Adsense support but that rarely happens. Most can’t even contact Adsense support. However, one can make a one-time appeal to Google Adsense, which is turned down most often than not.

As well, Google determines how much they are willing to pay you. At some time, you are going to earn from 200-300$ but it will drastically go down, even with the same amount of Adsense impressions. Thus, they can actually change your share whenever they like. It can go as low as 50% lower the next day. Moreover, an estimate of 8 out 10 clicks only gets accounted for! Google then still decides which clicks they would consider, and pay you for it.

Running adsense may even equate to losing money. Once you have done your research, you will learn that you could earn more money by running affiliate ads, running ads from other programs, and offering private ad sales. They can offer a flat fee that is 25% more than what adsense offers. Moreover, you don’t have to worry of getting banned and losing your income while running your site.

But most of all, running ads on your site takes away your readers from your blog. If you really value when your visitors take a look at what you write, then having ads incorporated with your blog increases the possibility that they leave your blog.

I have listed some reasons why you should not make use of Google Adsense. This system offers the possibility of getting unfairly banned, not compensating you of what they owe, and paying you less of what you deserve.

As you can see, I do use google adsense and I love it, but not everyone feels the same way.

Whatever you do, do not try to fool the system, or the system will make you look like a fool.
The choice is yours, I hope this post helps you in making a decision.

Getting started with Google Adsense

Webmaster News Blog - Getting started with Google Adsense

Managing a website can be a difficult task considering its maintenance, content, and management issues. Other changes may positively or negatively affect your site. These include market trends, competitors, traffic, etc. This article offers some tips on how to maximize the potential of one’s site in using Google Adsense to create more profit and sustenance.

In buidling an adsense website, one should always consider whether to write about a general or specific topic. Consequently, these come with their advantages and disadvantages. Having a site with a general subject may invite greater traffic due to its universality of topics. On the other hand, specific or niche topics work better with Google Adsense as targeting of ads become easier. However, make sure that there are available ads related to your topic of choice. Though you want a topic that is enjoyable to you, don’t forget to look up whether you are comfortable with the ads’ payout level. You should always remember to maximize the potential of adsense in creating profit.

Since you have just started to create your site, when do you start to put adsense on it? Having a site with scattered or almost no content, then adsense will produce ads that are not related to your choice of topic. This has always happened to either new sites with adsense or sites with relatively new or different topic. The best time to put an adsense on a new site is when one has gotten better traffic and established inbound links.

By this time, you are now ready to insert that adsense in your site, so where do you place it? Setting an adsense is relatively much easier in a new site than an existing site, since there is lesser content to start with. Ad location and sizes play a major role in the performance of these ads. One should always consider placing these ads where visitors not only get to see it, but also click it. Among the best location include the left hand side and the middle of the page. On the other hand, performance of ad sizes may differ per website. You should try which suits best for your site; it may be either a skyscraper or just a regular rectangle.

Familiarity is the key to success. Remembering these three easy steps will help in getting started with Google Adsense. This proves that any person who has passion in generating online content can make use and maximize the potential of adsense ads in creating profit.

Breaking Out The Toolbox

Webmaster News Blog - Breaking Out The Toolbox

You got a loose screw or a broken household item? Maybe your car or a kitchen appliance needs some attention? Perhaps you just got some furniture or another item that needs assembled? So “who you gonna call?”

Most likely you are going to break out the tools and have a go at it. Even if you don’t consider yourself Mr. Fix It, chances are you have handled a screwdriver a time or two. Then again perhaps you are a handy man, thus making it more likely that you will have success with your tools.

When it comes to building, managing, and promoting your web site the need and benefit of web tools are just as important. Why is that people may wonder? And what kind of web tools are available? For that matter, where do you find the toolbox?

For the purposes of this discussion we are going to focus on the proper use of keywords. Equally as relevant we are going to review the value and need of keywords. What kind of keywords are we talking about?

As many of you know, the large percentage of Internet surfers use search engines to locate web sites that address or contain information they wish to view and digest. Obviously the most famous search engines are Google, Yahoo, and now Bing. Most surfers do not recall or have the exact name of the web site they are looking for so they use these search engines to assist them.

By simply typing in a relevant word or a “keyword” that is descriptive or related to the site they desire to find, the search engine will present a search result list. Usually that will jog the memory or offer satisfactory options for the Internet traveler. This is where the use of keywords is valuable.

Practically speaking if someone is seeking information, product, or services that you offer, your aim is to have your web page feature high on the search result list that is produced in response to the words the Net surfer types in. For this to happen, then your site needs to contain a nice array of popular or keywords words that are related to your site and its content.

The more tag words you implement combined with the likelihood they are applied, will improve the promotion miles you can gain from them. At the same time, and seemingly illogical, over use of individual keywords can have little or negative effect on our page ranking. “How do I know what is enough and not too much?” one would naturally ask.

You can use a simple percentage formula that is called by some keyword density. According to some who analyze the effectiveness of keywords, you want keep the keyword density in the 3% to 8% range, which plainly speaking means that you should not use any keyword more than 8% of the total words in your content. So if you have a post of 300 words, than no keyword should be used more than 24 times for optimum effect. At the other end of the range is 3%, meaning you will employ some keywords at least 9 times each in a 300 word post. Now keep in mind this is not an exact science so don’t be calling down evil upon me if this formula does not work 100% of the time.

Clearly the use of keywords is not the only variable to successful web marketing and search engine rankings. For example the location of keywords is important. If, for instance, your post is about classic Corvettes, you would not save your use of the words like Chevrolet and car until the last paragraph, nor would use those words 9 times in the first paragraph of your 300 word post.

Though it is important to use your premium keywords in the beginning of and in the description of your post, you want to cleverly disperse your keywords woven throughout your content. “For crying out loud, I am still confused, frustrated, and totally clueless” some of you are rebutting. Don’t worry you are not alone.

That is why help is available. Hey many of us can’t fix our car or our appliances, or like me, you hate to put book shelves together. So you let the “professionals” use their toolbox, nothing wrong with that. Search engine services, like Google, have on line tools that will analyze your site and/or the content you feature and give you valuable suggestions for keywords to use.

Many of them have keyword tracking tools that provide a chart for you to see how many people have used the keywords they are recommending. So you can see for yourself which ones are better when compared to others. Of course you will use an appropriate number of them.

So as we rap up this powwow, it is vital that we remind you of a couple tidbits. As is always the case, success breeds success. By all means use words that are productively working for you. Matter of fact, and also always applicable, you can view the success of others and the keywords used by other web masters with sites similar to yours. You can even track their keyword responses to know just how effective each of their tag words is.

In conclusion, please, and I mean please, keep in mind this is not a word “game”. You need to use keywords in conjunction with quality content. Many web promoters try and cheat the system and spam a post with a saturation of keywords or tags. Or they write a post with the right formula of keyword use but the content is senseless and completely pointless. If you want keywords to work for your Internet promotion, than you must use them appropriately.

Now you have the secret or at least the toolbox.

Top 10 Internet Businesses: Internet Research Services

Webmaster News Blog - Top 10 Internet Businesses: Internet Research Services

“Seek and ye shall find” to quote a famous teacher. (And you should be ashamed if you don’t know who that is) In a broader sense, we all have heard of the people that are in the information business, have we not?

And freely speaking, there are a few of us that are actually very, very good at gathering information. Let’s try and ramp up that number. Maybe that will include you?

Which begs the question what is an Internet Research service and why is it important? And better yet, can you make money doing it? Let me assure you that if this gig is for you, that you can make some dough in it. So keep reading please.

The Internet Research profession or trade primarily revolves around gathering needed information for corporations, legal firms, research centers, and many small to medium sized business. What kind of research? Let’s take a contemplative leer into that.

 In the corporate world and in smaller business: Information is crucial in the corporate arena. It involves a multi pronged strategy. Information and data on product, sales, manufacturing, shipping/receiving, supplies, market trends, market status, and financial analysis.
 In the legal department: This takes a few directions also. Legal research is relied upon in day to day business and industry to guarantee that all potential legal liability is averted. This is why corporations and major businesses have a legal department and/or a law firm on retainer. In a standard law firm extensive research and compilation of relevant data will win a high percentage of their cases. Nothing beats facts and good old preparation. Have you ever seen the volumes of data that law firms used to have to comb by finger? Imagine the value and efficiency of using the Internet and internal computer storage!
 Research Centers may range from medical/science related facilities, charities, to insurance companies and any analogous enterprises and organizations.

Therefore it is not hard to picture the necessity of having thorough and relentless information seekers on staff if you want to continue being successful and avoid obstacles or surprises. The Internet has become an enormous and substantial tool to accomplish the task. And the salary potential is quite rewarding for those who score a position in an Internet research job. The potential earning power is also there, if you, operate a Internet Research service.

The clincher is that the skills required are very straight forward. You will need to be proficient in Internet use and research skills. You need to know how to methodically plod through an abundant amount of stats, testimony, legal precedents, reports, summaries, case histories, records, facts, and trends. And separate the non essentials and bull. The cool thing is that people who are good at this usually like doing it. It appears to provide some kind of euphoric high by causing an endorphin rush as they digest and sift through information like a conquering Jedi Knight. And did I tell you that you get paid for it?

Aside from gladiator librarian like research skills and Internet command you will need strong customer service skills. Now if a company is looking beyond the research duties there may be qualifications that involve law studies, business management, business operations, and/or any other relevant studies linked to your job description.

So, what do you think? Are you a person with fleeting fingers and a hunger for information gathering? Because if you are, than there are opportunities at your front door.

The beauty of all this it may offer options of working at home. Seriously Internet research can truly be a satisfying and challenging, a gratifying and lucrative Internet business. You really need to check this out.

More Than Simply Posting A Link

Webmaster News Blog - More Than Simply Posting A Link

Are you that guy or gal that people come to for a chat? Maybe some advice or a listening ear? Did you ever think or ask yourself “why me?”

I can answer that for you. Aside from your endearing personality and your drop dead looks you have built up a reputation and a track record as being that guy or gal. Your interactions with people, the way you conduct yourself and the manner in which you give well thought out comments has registered in the minds of your peers, co-workers, or people you have crossed paths with.

What do you think would happen, if as people confided in you, you simply smiled and handed them a piece of paper that said ‘buy my book on Amazon.com and it will solve your problem’? Or what if someone had a work related question they knew you could answer and they approached you. Then after they described their situation you replied, ”Come over to my house later and maybe we will discuss it there”?

Realistically even if those responses were ultimately helpful it would come across a bit cold and calculated. People would assume you do not really care that much about their plight or need. Your reputation would likely be that you are one that doesn’t have much to offer them in the way of friendship or cooperation. Even the good intentions you may have will seem shallow and not without an ulterior motive.

Guess what? Some of us do something like this on the Internet when we are marketing our web site. And don’t kid yourself; you have to draw a fine line between soliciting web visitors and gaining the trust and having attractive spirit needed to build up visitor traffic, example?

Okay you have your spectacular web site and you are rightfully proud of it and what it offers. Let’s say your site is a financial advice page offering sound debt management, investment, savings, and lending counsel. It is called MoneySkills.com. On your site you explain and display your credentials and the opportunity that visitors have of retaining your consulting services. You even offer some informative CD’s and booklets that people may purchase.

As part of an aggressive and sound marketing strategy you frequent ‘money talk’ forums to promote your splendid site. You genuinely feel you have solutions and practical advice for people and you know they will benefit and enjoy your site. So as you scroll through the topics and threads you carefully select a handful of well observed threads to place your link. So while people are reading and posting they come across your comment and it says “I would love to help you with your money. Visit MoneySkills.com”, or something to that effect.

So what’s wrong with this picture? After giving it some thought you should have come up with a couple issues here. First of all just picture how it looks to the eye. The link appears shallow and disjointed from the thread conversation doesn’t it? It says to your forum friends “I am obviously only concerned with advertising my link. I could care less what any of you say!” Or maybe it comes across as “I don’t have time to engage in commentary, I am too busy with my web site”. It also puts out the thought or implication that “this forum is a waste of your time, go to my site where the real answers are”. Is that what you want? Do you think people are going to jump at the chance to visit your site based solely on a link?

Secondly, what makes your post or your site link any different from the dozens of others who simply post there link on forums and move on? You’re just another forum poser if you do that. “But isn’t it part of marketing to promote my site?” you insist.

Yes, indeed it is. And no one is saying that you should not post your link on forums. In fact everyone would agree that you should. But it is the nature of how you present it that will make or break the impact of posting your link.

Let’s use another scenario in life to drive home our second point. Imagine you’re at a picnic and you are meeting and greeting the other guests. What do you think of the people who right away start in on their business and the promoting of it?

“Hi my name is Cedric. So how are you enjoying the party?”

“Oh hi Cedric, I’m Siegfried. Well I have to tell you the burgers were great Cedric. But I would love to tell you about the shoe store I own. How are you and your family set with shoes, Cedric? Because if you need some shoes or just want to look at what we carry, I have a catalog with me that I would gladly share with you”
“Yeah, ah, no thanks theres Siggy”

Now picture instead the above conversation with a couple changes.

“Hi my name is Cedric. So how are you enjoying the party?”

“Hey Cedric, my name is Siegfried. I am enjoying the party very much, thanks. So where are you from?”

The two have a great conversation about who they know at the picnic and what their favorite way to grill steaks is and so on. Later on Cedric meets up with an old friend named Tom. Tom was late because he had to work that day. In fact he came to the party dressed for work in his shirt, slacks, and tie. As the two are talking Cedric asks Tom.

“Hey Tom, those are some nice shoes you got there, where did you get them?”

Tom replies “oh you see that gentleman over there, his name is Siegfried. He owns a shoe store across town. Great store and straight up guy” ……………………………..

Can you see the difference that would have on Cedric’s view of Siegfried and his shoe store? So now let’s go back to our forum scenario. What you need to do while on forums, is simply engage in compelling discussions about whatever the thread is hashing over and be an interesting part of the group. Share your experience and expertise as it relates to each progressive conversation. Gain peoples respect and trust. At the same time you discreetly display your link indiscriminately below your comment like a signature. In fact some forums have an arrangement where you can set up an ongoing signature. Make it big enough to notice but small enough as to not be “shouting” it out to the world.

The fellow forum readers should know you as the guy or gal that knows a lot about the topic and is a humble and considerate participant sharer in the group conversation. The presence of your link will eventually seem bigger in the eyes of those reading your thought provoking responses. Most likely people will begin to refer to your site and even ask you about it. Inevitably someone else will have clicked on it and will comment about it.

The reality is, selling yourself will sell your site. But be forewarned people smell a phony bologna. Be genuine and not transparent. Be helpful but not bombastic and a big talker. Answer peoples questions in a professional and personal manner.

That does not infer that you give away the whole shebang and all of your trade secrets. But you’re an expert for crying out loud. You should be able to give people adequate and complete direction and still leave reasons for them to make use of your web site.

Are we clear on this now? Cause I hate repeating myself. (lol) Seriously gang, don’t mail it in and choose the blitzkrieg method. When you’re on the forums of your choice, be a person not a “spam” machine. Post meaningful commentary and unpretentious remarks. As people enjoy your contributions, they will make a “profile” of you and as they respect you and your knowledge they will gravitate to your link.

Go Ahead and Kiss Yourself

Webmaster News Blog - Go Ahead and Kiss Yourself

No really, I mean it, give yourself a big fat wet kiss! Yes, KISS, as in Keep It Simple Stupid! We have all heard this and yet do we get it? Do you get it?

In our audience we have Internet web masters, operators, designers, contributors, and the like who all bring something to the proverbial table. But there are some disciplines we need to consider and care for if we want our site to “blow up” as the Now! generation says. And yes I know some of you would like the Now! Generation to “shut up”. But hey some of their lingo is actually telling. Anyhow back to the point of simplicity.

We are going to take a moment then and set out a guide of some simple steps that need to be done regularly and daily in order for this explosion to occur. How to make your site ‘da bomb’ so to speak.

You see the thing is many entrepreneurs some times over think themselves and overlook the easy but important functions. And while they may be “I know that” type of things, the fact is they are sometimes undervalued and thus underperformed or done inconsistently. So let’s examine them so this is not the case with you and me.

Okay so you have your web page all jazzed and dressed to the 9’s. You are relentlessly checking your rankings and attacking your SEO, all good by the way. So what are some of us forgetting? The basics, the simple?

You need to approach your web business in a methodical and orderly fashion. The way most responsible workers do at other jobs. From CEO’s to professional athletes and fast food cooks to news editors. You have to cover the full gamut, the whole enchilada. But we are going to spell out a couple of these simple things instead of leaving it at that general but poignant statement of “do it all”.

  • Have a schedule: Yes while it may be a nuisance, humanity is habitual and rhythmic. While there is room for flexibility as far as rigidness goes, do not skimp on the amount of time you need to get it all done.
    1. Schedule out how many hours you need for the week and each day to do everything you must and want to do.
    2. Proportion that time accordingly but include time for everything. Like what? Read on my brothers and sisters
  • Marketing: We will not dwell on this because this is not among what I am calling the simple things. Nevertheless it is on your schedule!
  • Update info: Please for the love of all that is good keep your information up to date! I cannot believe how many times details change and the web site does not reflect the changes. For example if you are a retail store and/or site, do not say you have things in stock that you don’t have in stock. This is why you need to set specific time aside for updating. Do it as often as needed. Did a phone number change or a price change? Is your blog yesterday’s or last week’s news? Which leads to ………………..
  • Fresh content: Some web guru’s say a blog or the like can be added to up to 2 -3 times a day. And not that you can’t do it 100 times a day if you wish or if there is that much to say. The point is schedule time to be sure a steady flow of fresh content is finding its way on to your web page.
  • Accuracy and variety (editing): In some ways this overlaps with updating information. But I am separating this point in this regard. Make time in your schedule, preferably after you finished preparing something for posting, and make sure things are spelled correctly and that the grammar is at least acceptable. We should try and be flawless in this of course, but at least make a conscientious effort to be on target with your command of the language. And try not to be redundant. Don’t simply and routinely recycle the same article or post and naively just present the same substance with different words. Now of course in many cases the topic will be the same and a number of points may bear repeating. Naturally your readers may miss things also and therefore repetition is perfectly natural. Just don’t be a broken and predictable record. Don’t “mail it in” as they say. Mix the emphasis and/or mix topics as much as is possible.
  • Be a student and researcher: Make time to keep up with your topic or area of discussion. Be as current and thorough as you can be. Know what you are talking about.
  • Be yourself: Don’t try and wow us or impress us with intellect. Be creative and interesting. Intelligence is relative to a large degree. I mean knowing a lot about sports does not make you an MIT prospect but you can present sports in a knowledgeable light. But don’t try and pretend to be something or someone you are not. This also requires some of your time. Schedule time to think about how you are going to present your site.

There you have it: an overview on how to kiss yourself. Bear in mind that after examination of these items you may conclude a couple things, among them perhaps will be the conclusion “man I have no time to do all of this!”

Don’t sweat it if that is the case. That merely means you need to delegate. Yes you need help. Get it. Don’t decide “hey I’ll just do the best I can”. Because the reality is you can do better if you seek assistance. And assistance shouldn’t be met with resistance. Frankly it can be embraced. Better yet it can be FREE of charge. You have friends don’t you? Or maybe you can fish out some business partners and work out a pro bono arrangement. You may be pleasantly surprised.

What time is it? Time for a kiss, that’s what time it is. Roll up your sleeves then and plot out your week and your day. Be certain that you account for all of the duties needed to maintain a money making and/or popular web site. Realistically speaking whether money is your aim or not don’t you want your time to be worth something? So then make your time worth something by allocating your time efficiently. And remember to Keep It Simple Stupid!

Topical Power

Webmaster News Blog - Topical Power

Years ago, it is sad to say, but the Internet was driven by the sex industry. Well perhaps that was not sad for everyone, but as a society that was a little alarming in my humble opinion.

If you look at the most popular web sites you may argue we have not progressed very far from those days. Among the most searched and visited sites are pages about Paris Hilton (I’m not kidding), Britney Spears (Still not kidding), Eminem (I wish I was kidding), Girls (as in pretty girls), and American Idol.

Of course there are more magnetic and enormously popular sites that are a far cry from the fan club, celebrity obsession sites. Of course I beg to differ with calling some of those people a celebrity. But that’s just me. Anyhow I digress.

Also among the most visited sites are Facebook.com, Google.com, Hi5.com, Live.com,MSN.com, MySpace.com, Orkut.com, Wikipedia.com, Yahoo.com, and YouTube.com. You also have the notorious and fashionable sites like ebay.com, craigslist.com, amazon.com and adultfriendfinder.com, so on.

When it comes to you and I however we need to take a look at a different aspect of the popular web searches and site preferences. After all, none of the sites above are operated by any of us. Well I suppose some of us could have a fan site devoted to one of the more famous and sought after celebs, which actually brings me full circle to the point we are going to discuss.

Inevitably if we have a web page featuring content or anything related to a repeatedly searched topic then we are most likely going to do well. Why do we say most likely? That is because there is more to a successful web page than getting people to visit it. However that is markedly important. So how should that affect us?

If we are deciding what direction to take with an Internet business then we should understand what people want. After all we all know that this is a primary part of the supply and demand business model. So, what are people searching, in general terms, these days?

The numbers and the studies conclude that there are a number of topics that people are aggressively wanting to read about. Among them are health topics, food, sports, dating, business, arts, games, computers, recreation, shopping, society and cultural subjects, real estate, and reference material. This can break down like this:

  • Health = weight loss, medical conditions, beauty care and products, exercise, energy boost, and mental health concerns
  • Food = Diet, recipes, restaurants, etc.
  • Sports = Teams, leagues, players, tickets, etc.
  • Dating = personal ads, dating advice, chat rooms, etc
  • Business = finance, management, Internet business, job search, training, supplies, technology, etc.
  • Arts = Music, concerts, literature, paintings, sculptors, photography, fan pages, etc.
  • Games = On line games, Xbox, Playstation, etc
  • Computers = Education, Internet business, Internet use, technology, etc.
  • Recreation = Travel, movies, events, etc
  • Shopping = etc
  • Society and Culture = politics, news, current events, world events, heritage, etc
  • Real Estate = home searches, real estate agents, etc
  • Reference material = dictionary ,encyclopedia, Wikipedia, online schooling, research, etc

In light of this analysis then it would be beneficial to approach the presentation of your site with a topic mentality. Yes use the power of a topics or what some would call a niche market to target those who have already demonstrated a pattern of searching these topics of interest.

This should also come in handy when you are choosing keywords and Meta tags for your site. Overall the lesson to be learned here is that we live in a “table of contents” type society, especially when it comes to the Internet. So give the people what they want and make it easier and more likely for them to find your web page!

Be Organized When Seeking Traffic

Your web site is looking good and yet there it sits with little activity. The road less traveled is often lonely and frustrating isn’t it? How do you turn that road into a super highway?

Latest Webmaster News - Be Organized When Seeking Traffic

Chances are that you have applied some sort of strategy to attract more visitors and that is wonderful. Or maybe you are clueless as to what methods are out there to put into motion.

For the complete newbie, you need to put forth the same amount of effort into marketing your site as you did to building it. You no doubt had to be taught software applications new to you, along with computer related operations you were not familiar with before. Now it’s time to shampoo, rinse and repeat!

Yes you need to continue learning and acquiring marketing skills in a similar fashion. You will need to learn about SEO (Search Engine Optimization), use and selection of keywords, web directories, search engine ranking, cross linking, back linking, finding your target or niche market, affiliation/partnerships, various forms of advertising, etc.

As for the above mentioned cyber user with some working knowledge of how to be noticed, it may simply be a matter of reviewing your steps and deciding if you missed something. Sometimes in business we find that we may have overlooked a few details and as a result need to re-apply our strategy with a new conviction to those details.

All too often our product may be similar to other items on the market. Therefore we need to be sure that we don’t market ourselves with the same keywords or anything else that could lead to confusion. Obviously there will be certain areas where your product is going to compete on some level with the other like items. But innovation and creativity can set you apart from the others.

Also your choice of affiliates and partners can create a gap between you and your competitors. The stronger your marketing team is the more successful you will be. Sometimes it is that simple and basic.

Speaking of simple. Be sure to commit to doing the smaller and seemingly trivial things. Like changing the look of your site and ads periodically. Keep your marketing and traffic building campaign fresh and eye pleasing.

Sticking with the simple theme we ask. Have you listed your site on a web directory or a site index? There are popular useful ones. Ask your fellow web masters which ones they have found most useful. And of course check them out on your own.

Maybe you are trying too many things at one time for you to manage. When it comes to making money on the Internet perhaps you need to streamline your efforts when it comes to your revenue making tools. Why is this? Face it, not all of us are as organized and focused as others. Many of us are not multi taskers in the purest form. Some of us have less time to devote than others. So we will probably see more results if we take care of all the simple things first and maybe add one more detailed oriented concept to our traffic building campaign. For example you may consider pay-per-click ads and learn the nuances of that and once you have mastered that you can move on to adding another web traffic tool on top of that.

Now if the nature of your site is more of a writing outlet for you there are a couple different options to consider. If you are managing a blog or a forum for example, you may consider actually paying people to visit your site. This will promote your site in a few different ways. For one it will ensure a steady flow of hits to your site as well as generate a word of mouth campaign.

I recently read an instance where a web master had a formula of how to do this. For every dollar he or she pays into the web site he or she makes sure they are getting at least $3 in return in revenue. The old “you have to spend money to make money” approach.

As we touched on earlier in our discussion key words are a proven tool in creating a traffic jam on your site. It is easy and tricky at the same time however. To some degree your product or the nature of your site will dictate some of the keywords you will utilize.

Proceed with caution though. For example say your target or niche market is repairing or restoring automobiles. That can cover a wide variety of areas and tempt you to use any number of key words that can be misleading or get lost in a search engine shuffle with the hordes of other mechanics who have their own web site. Remember there are any number of other car related web sites that will likely consider the same keywords. And while you inevitably will end up using some keywords that will match your competitors, be sure you give thought to adding as many unique keywords as possible.

For example instead of “restoring old Chevy’s” you may use “bring Old Chevy’s back to life”. Or promote specific articles by make and year. Or if you are talking about repairs, highlight specific repairs. Instead of “repairing your car” you could use “fixing that Ford tranny”. This is called targeting a niche audience by way of sub niche phrasing.

When it comes to using keywords it would behoove you to learn as much as you can about how they work. You also have the luxury of using on line keyword tools that are available to all of us. Many of them are free. They will not only help you select key words you may have overlooked but they will tell you which keywords are being searched the most by the world of net surfers.

Hopefully this brief review will help you evaluate the present direction you have chosen concerning traffic building toward your site. Or hopefully it has given the new web masters ideas of where to start or how not to be impatient.

It is good to remember 2 important fundamental truths also. #1 – As a general rule most businesses take time to hit their stride. So don’t panic or give up if you are not making the money you envisioned in a short period of time. This is one of those moments where the phrase “it’s a marathon not a sprint” applies. #2 – The more organized and disciplined you are, the more you will reach the goals you have made for yourself. Keep track of what you have done and of what you are doing. Keep things as simple as you need to. There is no shame in staying within your personal abilities.

Before you know it people will be stopping by your site and checking out. Uh oh! That means someone has more work to do.
