Crooks using a technique called wardriving, cruise with a laptop looking for accessible wireless internet signals. Once they find a vulnerable netwrok, they installed sniffer programs to capture credit and debit card numbers as they move through a retailer's processing networks.

This low tech hacking has led to the largest hacking and identity theft case prosecuted by DOJ.
