Paypal donation button
Anybody here have used the button before and do you think that makes any difference? What I mean is that if you have a tech blog, would people actually make donation to keep the site running? What are your thoughts?

I doubt people would be so loyal. But if the site is providing some great service and stuff then people would not mind. Ive seen such a thing on some torrent site where they set their site running cost to $500 demanded the members to donate towards it so that they can run the site easily and mind me people actually donated to it. The also displayed the total amount received in form of donation till date next to it.

Yeah, you are right. Certain sites also provide free software and services FOC and they actually rely on donation to keep it going. But for those that display the kind of "buy a cup of coffee" not sure there's people who really donated towards it.

Random donations would be very very less or as good as none! Also those buy a coffee or buy a beer stuff I dont think will work out unless its a social networking site. Again I doubt if it really works out with social networks too.

Not sure. I think only business account works. However, kind of reserved of putting on that donation button. I still think that putting ads is still a viable option.

This is an interesting topic. In theory I would probably automatically think you would have little success. But maybe you only need a little success.
Some variables also would be the sheer volume of people you reach. The more people you reach the better chance you get of donations. Plus another thing is there are some people who would consider it but would be skeptical of you motive and the true application of funds. I do think you could try it and present it in a non offensive or irritating manner though. Overall I would call it a sponsorship. You could list the people who "donate" or present a link of their choice perhaps?

Agree with what ANAT has too say. Asking people to donate for site maintenance mentioning that you dont want to risk falling short of funds would certainly help. And some loyal visitors or subscribers would not mind donating some small bucks.
Or may be asking for as small as $0.50 or $1 would attract a lot of people.

No it is funny if you think about it. When I am researching something and I pull up a Wiki page I really do go right at the heart of the page. And sometimes if I know it is going to be down the page a bit I immediately start scrolling past the introduction.
