If I do happen to have to be in a link exchange, I like to have a page that is seperate from my main website where I keep all the links. I know that some link exchanges do not allow this though as they want a link directly on the page.

Well if you exchange link with the other person and he does the same thing to you, would you be happy as well? Usually both parties should agree to something of course main page is more preferable.

Ha ha ha I think you can try it out with those directories which ask for reciprocal links. I dont think they manually check wether the link i on the homepage or not the script might be doing it for them. Isant it? My be in that case the trick can work out

Yes I think if you use those dirctories that can often work. Of course, if you exchange links with someone then you will have to come up with terms that are agreeable to both.

Well, it depends on your agreement If both of you agree on link exchange, then it should be on the home page or otherwise where both parties are comfortable with. However, nowadays it's actually hard to work out link exchange because you need to come to an agreement. A pr3 would not exchange with pr0...something like that.
