I guess the most challenging part is link building. Getting a quality ones(high PR and related to your niche) is hard especially people would not consider exchange with your new sites.

Yap. the biggest problem is link building. its needed to get better PR. I believe many people already know about this problem. The more unique your niche, the more easier you will get good rank. If you have many backlink, its also a big help.

Nowadays even to get a good placement at search results ranking is also hard. You maybe placed second place on some keyword search and the next thing you know, tomorrow it has become fifth. Too many competitions I guess.

Nothing is really difficult in SEO, it is very time consuming. You have to work at getting good links every day. Each link you add is one more step towards your goal. Please remember - only relevant links and stay away from link farms. They will only get you into trouble. Do your links yourself and take the quality time needed to do it right.

Your links page should be categorized and presented well so that your visitors to your site will not be overwhelmed having to sift through many links to find something that sparks their interest. We have to remember to set our sites up for our visitors first and the search engines next. This is why the search engines now have so many "things" in place to catch spammers. Search engines want your site to be good for your visitors, not just set up to catch a bots attention.

Link Trading, keyword rich meta tags (title meta tag, keyword meta tag, description meta tag and an h1 tag for each page), keyword rich content on all your pages, text links on your pages leading to other pages within your site, contact phone number and address in your footer or header, and some great ad copy. All these things will be great for getting placed in the search engines. This will all take time - the more specific your niche the quicker the process goes. If you have a large niche then it will take longer but it is not impossible.

The majority of the people building websites do not have a clue what it takes, so you just have to be better than the average joe to get your site to come up first. Do a search for the keywords that you want to be found for, see what others that are already at number 1,2, and 3 are doing. Don't steal from them, but borrow their ideas and change them around so that it is original and beneficial to your site.

There is so much to say about SEO, but I will leave you all with these things for now.

Have a great day and best of luck to all.

Connie

Yes thank-you for all the advice. In thinking about it you are absolutely right. You can do well in terms of SEO if you are willing to be committed and to spend the time necessary.

I am glad that my post was helpful to you. Hopefully it will be helpful to some newer people also. I am new to this forum but I am not new to optimization. I spend hours and hours each day optimizing my sites, submitting them, updating them, interacting with customers and analyzing. Lots to do - our sites will never be DONE. If they ever get DONE - they will shortly after be gone.

Just one thing which I would like to hear from you is that how many hours do you actually put in to work on SEO? I have friends including myself that spends almost half of of our available Internet time but still do not get improved results. Maybe what you are saying is true to certain point. It's not the number of hours but the correct approach applied.

I used to stay home every day and work on my sites. For a while that was my only job. Now I have an outside job but before that I spent from 7 am till about 7 pm on my websites. I would break up everything I would have to do so that I would not get bored. I would ask for links for an hour or so, then I would make some posts to some forums, then I would work on keywords, adding more products to my site, adding relevant content, creating text links. I would even do a reverse search and lets say that I want to sell wrought iron accessories. I would do a reverse search on "wrought iron" and see which words people were typing into the internet the pertained to wrought iron. Then when I found out which wrought iron words were being searched for the most I would start to find out where I could put those words on my site. Then I would make these words my keywords, text links, footer links, meta titles etc...even put those words in my navigation.

Now I work outside of my home, but as soon as I get home and get settled in I start working on my sites again. Although I must admit - now that I have found this forum and a few others that I am on - I do not spend my whole time on my site.

This will make my site not grow as quickly but I do like to give to others what I have received from others ahead of me.

Nowadays social marketing is up and coming - the new wave - interacting with others. So I interact along with optimizing. Whenever I can, I ask others to include me on their sites or to tell others about me.

I have rambled on a bit but I hope I have somewhat answered your question. When you are a webmaster trying to be number 1. You have to make your websites your life. And please remember..... ENJOY what you are doing, relax and let it happen.

Geee...Nice one over there. Myself I always find difficulty on how to distribute my times. Sometimes my day job can be demanding and after coming home from work, I have little time left before going to bed. I still find time to join forums but that's all I can do. Usually weekends will mean more spare time but sometimes it can be limited due to social commitments.

When times are tough for me to find any extra time for my websites I do this:

I have a Monday - Friday list of things that I am going to accomplish on each particular day.

Let's say it looks something like this:
Monday - ask for 2 links exchanges
optimize for one keyword
add two products to my site
add one entry to my blog
Post 2 entrys in forum
read email
back up my site

Tuesday - Email customers my latest "deal"
post 2 entries to forums
read email
add one product to google base
create a text link
back up my site

Wed - read email
ask 2 customers for referrals
add a new page, or a new article, or something new to my site
back up my site.

And on and on.... you get what I mean.... then I keep that list open for the day that I am on and whenever I get even 1 minute that I am not doing something - I look at the list and see if I have time to even get one thing started. Maybe not finished but started. I leave my computer running all day so that I do not have to boot it up each time I want to use it and by the end of the day - I am surprised how much I actually accomplished.

It doesn't always work - but at least I make a great effort to get things done. And I enjoy the process - trying to take a few minutes here and there becomes a challenge and I love to challenge myself.

If the stuff doesn't get done that day - well then I decide to either move that stuff to the next day or just move onto the next day and get back to this stuff next week. No pressures. I keep this light and fun.
