Basically sends out what it calls bots or crawler which will move from one link to another gathering content and information. The thing collected will be stored in a database that contains index of all the sites visited and the information. When a person types a query, the search engine will use its algorithm and determine how to present the best result to the user.

Basically its game of keywords.After making the page containing any content.we put some keywords in it.When somebody write keywords in the search , the search engine goes to the list were there the keyword exist.It brings out the list of sites related to the specific keyword.By this procedure the customer is able to get his desired contents.

I just wonder where you got the article from. It seems that the author must be an "insider" perhaps since it can even relate in detail about how the se works including on the hardware that google is using. I just wonder how much the cost for the tons of servers there.
