Google I'm feeling lucky
What exaclty does the "I'm feeling lucky" button on the Google home page do? Is it just another search button?
It seems to have been nothing but a waste of space. As far as I know nobody actually uses it because they don't know what it does.
Does anyone know?

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
Yeah, the lucky button brings you directly into the link from the first search result, so if this is what you wanted, you get there real fast, but for me most of the times that is not what I was searching for so I never use it.

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
Plus due to PR rankings if you type in a weird search more then likely it will pull up a site which can be harmful to yoursite (if you have seen the malware warning on some results you will know what Im talking about - Sometimes it doesnt bring that up on "feeling lucky")
Should rename it to:
Im feeling suicidel

The "I'm Feeling LuckyTM" button automatically takes you to the first web page returned for your query.
An "I'm Feeling Lucky" search means less time searching for web pages and more time looking at them.

This is what you get when you click the button without entering any search queery
Lol even I had never tried it till today but then thought of giving it a try after reading your post.
Thanks for the post. Discovered something new today

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
Hey, me too...I never bother about doing that either until I read the thread here
Anyway when it comes to search results usually the first one is not the one we need but I guess it's also fun to try it out.

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
So its basically just a cue jump device, but 99 per cent of the time it does not take you to the right place! It seems liek a bit of a waste of good advertising space on Google. I wonder why they bother having it there and who came up with the idea?

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
I think there is a fancy term for such shortcuts - bookmarklet or something like that. It works like a bookmark but have more functionalities.

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
I'm not convinced. As you can see from the posts above nobody actually uses the feature. Most people have no idea what it does! So why bother with it?
Give me an old fashioned search engine anyway day of the week.

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
The concept behind the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' is that it takes you to a related link straight away, and if you get lucky, you'll get linked to a website that is actually related to what you want.

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
Yes but nine times out of ten you don't end up anywhere near the website that you where actually looking for. They might as well have added an additional advert. There was more chance of me clicking on that then the "i'm feeling lucky" button!

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
the 'i'm feeling lucky button' i tried it. it has something to do with hmm say you are searching for something and then you hit that button, it supposedly takes you to the most accurate result of all results. but well yea it's just a waste of space.

Re: Google I'm feeling lucky
Lol i'm glad someone else agrees with me that the "i'm feeling lucky" button is just a waste of time, effort and space ont he Google home page. You would think they could have come up with something a little better than that lol.
Still never mind
